Figure skating spin

A figure-skating element in which a skater rotates around a vertical axis while maintaining contact with the ice. Skaters vary their position, edge, and direction to create distinct spin types.

Angular momentum: A measure of rotational motion that depends on an object's mass distribution and angular velocity. Pulling the limbs inward reduces rotational inertia and increases spin speed while angular momentum is conserved.
Figure skating position: A named arrangement of a figure skater's torso, arms, and free leg during an element. Position names distinguish the recognizable shapes held during spins.
ISU Judging System: The International Skating Union's framework for scoring figure-skating elements and program components. It assigns base values and grades of execution to spins in international competition.
Flying spin: A spin entered with a jump that lifts the skater off the ice before rotation continues on the blade. Its airborne entry distinguishes it from a spin begun entirely on the ice.
Upright spin: A figure-skating spin performed with the torso relatively upright and the supporting leg extended or slightly bent. It is a basic spin family, with variations created by changing the arms, free leg, or torso.
Moment of inertia: A measure of how strongly an object's mass distribution resists angular acceleration about an axis. A skater changes moment of inertia by drawing the arms and free leg toward the rotation axis.
Figure skating edge: The curved path a figure-skating blade traces on ice while leaning on its inside or outside edge. Edge quality and control help determine how a skater enters and centers a spin.
Spin level: A figure-skating spin difficulty classification, from Level 1 through Level 4 under ISU rules. Difficult features and position changes can raise a spin's assigned level.
Death spiral: A pair-skating element in which one partner pivots while the other circles low over the ice, held by one hand. Unlike a solo spin, it depends on two partners moving around a shared pivot.
Sit spin: A figure-skating spin performed in a low position with the skating knee deeply bent. Its low body position creates a distinct silhouette and demands sustained leg strength.
