Filiki Eteria

Filiki Eteria was a secret society founded in Odessa in 1814 to organize a Greek uprising against Ottoman rule. Its network helped prepare the Greek War of Independence.

Nikolaos Skoufas: A Greek merchant from Epirus and one of Filiki Eteria’s three founders. He helped establish the society in Odessa and shape its early organization.
Initiation ritual: A formal ceremony marking entry into a group and often transmitting its rules or commitments. Oaths and staged admission helped secure members’ loyalty and secrecy.
Emmanouil Pappas: A Greek merchant and revolutionary who led an uprising in Macedonia in 1821. He joined Filiki Eteria and helped extend its revolt into northern Greece.
Battle of Dragashani: A 1821 battle in Wallachia in which Ottoman forces defeated Ypsilantis’s revolutionary army. Its defeat ended the principal military campaign launched from the Danubian Principalities.
Athanasios Tsakalov: A Greek scholar and revolutionary, and one of Filiki Eteria’s founders. His political connections and organizational work helped build the society.
Cellular network: An organization composed of small, partly autonomous groups linked through limited channels. Filiki Eteria’s dispersed membership relied on trusted intermediaries rather than open assembly.
Papaflessas: A Greek cleric and revolutionary who helped prepare the 1821 uprising in the Peloponnese. As a society emissary, he organized support and advanced plans for revolt.
Greek independence: The establishment of Greece as an independent state after the War of Independence. The society’s intended revolt became part of the struggle that produced independence.
Emanuil Xanthos: A Greek merchant from Patmos and one of Filiki Eteria’s founders. His memoirs became a key account of the society’s beginnings.
Alexander Ypsilantis: A Greek military officer who led the 1821 uprising in the Danubian Principalities. The society selected him to lead its revolutionary effort.
