Seneca Lake : The deepest and largest of New York’s Finger Lakes, extending through the heart of the region. Its steep shores and cool waters shape the region’s wine-growing corridor.
Pleistocene glaciation : Repeated advances of continental ice sheets during the Pleistocene reshaped large parts of Earth’s surface. Ice sheets excavated and deepened the valleys that became the Finger Lakes.
Finger Lakes wine region : An American wine-growing region in central New York, centered on the Finger Lakes and their surrounding slopes. It is the region’s best-known agricultural identity, especially for Riesling.
Haudenosaunee : A confederacy of Indigenous nations in northeastern North America, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. Haudenosaunee nations have deep historical and continuing ties to Finger Lakes lands.
Cayuga Lake : A long, deep Finger Lake in central New York, bordered by Ithaca and several wine-growing communities. Its southern end anchors Ithaca, while vineyards line parts of its shores.
Glacial erosion : The wearing away of rock and sediment by moving glacier ice and its debris. Erosion carved the long troughs that distinguish these lakes from ordinary river valleys.

Sullivan Expedition : A 1779 military campaign ordered by George Washington against Haudenosaunee communities allied with the British. Its destructive campaign crossed the region and forcibly displaced many Indigenous residents.
Keuka Lake : A Y-shaped lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region, bordered by vineyards and small communities. Its unusual branching shape distinguishes it from the region’s other long lakes.
Glacial lake : A lake formed or altered by glacial ice, meltwater, or glacial deposits. The Finger Lakes are glacially carved lakes, although their basins were not simply dammed by ice.
