Finnish nationalism

Finnish nationalism promoted Finnish language, cultural identity, and political self-government, especially under Swedish and Russian rule. It helped shape Finland’s emergence as an independent nation-state.

Finnish War: A war fought from 1808 to 1809 in which Russia conquered Finland from Sweden. The war transferred Finland to Russian rule, creating new conditions for Finnish political identity.
Elias Lönnrot: A Finnish physician and philologist who collected oral poetry and compiled the Kalevala. His work made Finnish and Karelian oral traditions central to national culture.
Finnish language: A Finnic language spoken chiefly in Finland and written in the Latin alphabet. Promoting Finnish in education and public life was a defining nationalist demand.

Johan Ludvig Runeberg: A Finnish-Swedish poet whose works helped shape nineteenth-century Finnish national memory. His poetry offered a powerful account of Finnish character, though written chiefly in Swedish.
Fennicization: The adoption or promotion of Finnish language and culture in institutions and public life. It describes efforts to shift Finland’s cultural and administrative life toward Finnish.
Finnish Parliament: Finland’s national legislature, established as a unicameral parliament in 1906. Its democratic reform followed political mobilization shaped partly by nationalist aims.
Swedish language in Finland: A national language of Finland spoken by a minority, with deep historical roots in the country. Its established status complicated nationalist efforts to define Finland through Finnish alone.
