Fire alarm system

A network of detectors, control equipment, and notification devices that detects signs of fire and warns people in a building or area.

Smoke detector: A device that detects airborne particles produced by smoke and signals a possible fire. Smoke detectors provide a common first signal to the system’s control equipment.
Fire detection: The identification of indicators that a fire has started or may be developing. A fire alarm system is one organized way to detect and report these indicators.
Addressable fire alarm system: A fire alarm system that identifies individual devices or points on its signaling circuits. Addressable equipment can report which detector or device initiated an event.
Fire evacuation: The organized movement of people away from a fire hazard to a safer location. Alarm notification initiates or supports evacuation when a fire threatens occupants.
Heat detector: A device that signals when temperature exceeds a threshold or rises unusually quickly. Heat detection can identify fires where smoke sensing is unsuitable.
Fire alarm signal: An electrical or communicated indication of an alarm, fault, or supervisory condition. Signals carry information between system devices and the control panel.
Conventional fire alarm system: A fire alarm system that reports alarms by circuit or zone rather than identifying each device individually. Its zone-based reporting contrasts with addressable identification of individual points.
Evacuation alarm: An audible or visible signal intended to prompt people to leave a building or area. It is a principal human-facing outcome of a fire alarm system.
Fire alarm control panel: The equipment that receives fire-alarm inputs, supervises circuits, and coordinates system outputs. It interprets detector signals and controls alarms and other connected functions.
Fire alarm monitoring: The remote supervision of fire alarm conditions by a monitoring station or responsible service. Remote monitoring can transmit alarms beyond the building to responders or operators.
