Fire and movement

Fire and movement is a tactical method in which one element suppresses an opposing force while another moves to a better position. The elements may then exchange roles.

Bound (military tactic): A short movement from one position of cover to another during tactical advance. A moving element can advance in successive short bounds as the other provides cover.
Fireteam: A small military unit, often organized around coordinated roles and weapons. Fireteams commonly divide tasks so some members cover while others move.
Maneuver warfare: An approach to warfare that seeks advantage by disrupting an opponent’s cohesion and decision-making. Fire and movement is a small-unit method within the broader practice of maneuver.
Bounding overwatch: A movement technique in which one element advances while another watches for threats and is ready to provide fire. Unlike the broader term, bounding overwatch emphasizes observation and readiness as well as covering fire.
Overwatch (military tactic): A position or action that provides observation and readiness to support another force. An overwatching element watches the movement and is prepared to engage threats.
Squad tactics: Methods for organizing and employing a military squad in combat. Fire and movement is one of the basic methods used in squad-level maneuver.
Firepower: The capacity of a force to deliver effective weapons effects against a target. Covering fire uses a force’s firepower to constrain an opponent during movement.
Suppressive fire: Gunfire intended to limit an opposing force’s ability or willingness to act effectively. Suppression is the supporting effect; fire and movement also includes the coordinated advance.
Cover and concealment: Cover reduces exposure to weapons; concealment hides a person or position from observation. The moving element uses terrain and obstacles to reduce exposure during each bound.
Urban warfare: Combat conducted in built-up areas, where buildings and streets shape movement and engagement. Buildings can provide cover, but short sightlines make coordinated movement especially demanding.
