Fire engine

A vehicle that carries firefighters and firefighting equipment to emergencies. Many fire engines carry a water pump, tank, and hoses for delivering water to a fire.

Fire pump: A pump that moves water under pressure for firefighting or other purposes. It draws water from the tank or a supply source and sends it through the hoses.
Structural firefighting: Fire suppression and rescue work involving buildings and other constructed structures. Engine crews commonly use onboard water and hose lines to attack building fires.
Aerial fire truck: A fire-service vehicle equipped with an extendable ladder or platform for elevated access. It emphasizes reaching heights, while a conventional engine emphasizes pumping and hose operations.
Hand pump: A pump operated by human force to move water or another fluid. Early firefighting apparatus relied on manual pumping before powered engines became common.
Fire hose: A flexible, pressure-resistant tube used to convey water or other firefighting agents. Hoses carry the engine’s pumped water to firefighters and nozzles.
Wildland firefighting: The prevention and suppression of fires in forests, grasslands, and other undeveloped areas. Wildland engines are adapted for rough terrain and limited water access.
Fire tanker: A vehicle that transports a large volume of water to firefighting operations. It supplies water in bulk, unlike an engine built around pumping and hose deployment.
Steam fire engine: A firefighting pump powered by a steam engine, widely used before motorized fire apparatus. It bridged hand-powered pumps and modern motorized fire engines.
Fire nozzle: A device fitted to a hose end to control the direction and form of its discharge. Nozzles shape the water stream delivered from the engine’s hoses.
Fire suppression: The actions and systems used to control or extinguish a fire. Water delivery from an engine is one method within the broader work of suppression.
