Fire (weapons)

Fire is the act of discharging a firearm, launching a weapon, or directing a weapon’s attack. It can be controlled, withheld, or directed according to tactical objectives.

Trigger (firearms): A firearm control that initiates or releases the firing mechanism. Pressing the trigger commonly begins the sequence that discharges a firearm.
Suppressive fire: Fire intended to prevent an enemy from observing, moving, or shooting effectively. It uses the threat of incoming weapons to limit an opponent’s actions.
Direct fire: Fire aimed at a target visible to the weapon operator. Unlike indirect fire, it depends on direct observation of the target.
Ammunition: Materials and devices used by weapons to produce an effect, including bullets, shells, and missiles. Each shot or launch consumes ammunition and limits how long fire can continue.
Gunner: A person trained to operate and aim a gun or other weapon. Gunners execute firing tasks and apply weapon-specific procedures.
Recoil: The backward movement of a firearm or launcher when it expels a projectile. Projectile acceleration produces an opposite reaction that can affect follow-up shots.
Indirect fire: Fire directed at a target that the weapon crew cannot see directly. Artillery and mortars use it to strike targets beyond direct view.
Ceasefire: An agreement or order to stop fighting or firing weapons. It suspends weapon fire rather than directing an attack.
Collateral damage: Incidental harm to civilians or civilian objects during an attack on a military target. Weapon fire can cause harm beyond its intended target.
Artillery observer: A military observer who identifies targets and adjusts artillery fire. Observers help indirect-fire crews place attacks on intended targets.
