Fireside chats

Fireside chats were radio addresses in which U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt explained policies and national events directly to the American public.

Radio broadcasting: The one-to-many transmission of audio programs by radio waves to receivers. It carried Roosevelt’s addresses into homes across the country.
Great Depression: A severe worldwide economic downturn that began in 1929 and lasted through much of the 1930s. Economic collapse created the uncertainty the first chats sought to address.
First fireside chat: Franklin D. Roosevelt’s March 12, 1933 radio address explaining the banking crisis and reopening of banks. It established the format by explaining a pressing policy in accessible terms.
Press conference: A public event in which an official answers questions from journalists. Unlike these question-and-answer events, Roosevelt’s chats were prepared addresses to the public.
