First aid

First aid is immediate, temporary care for someone who is injured or suddenly ill before professional medical treatment is available. It aims to preserve life, prevent worsening, and support recovery.

Primary survey: A rapid assessment that identifies life-threatening problems and guides immediate care. It structures first aid around urgent threats before less serious injuries.
Choking: A blockage of the airway that interferes with breathing. First aid techniques can relieve a severe obstruction while emergency help is summoned.
Scene safety: Assessment of hazards at an incident before approaching or helping. A safe approach prevents additional injuries to the person giving aid or others.
Emergency medicine: The medical specialty concerned with evaluating and treating acute illness and injury. It provides the professional clinical care that first aid cannot replace.
First aid training: Instruction and practice in recognizing emergencies and providing initial care. Training builds the practical skills needed to act calmly and appropriately.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: A lifesaving procedure using chest compressions, sometimes with rescue breaths, for cardiac arrest. It can maintain blood flow when a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
Burn: Tissue damage caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, radiation, or friction. Cooling and protection are immediate measures for many thermal burns.
Airway management: Measures that keep the passage for air into and out of the lungs open. An open airway is a prerequisite for effective breathing and resuscitation.
Advanced life support: A set of advanced emergency interventions performed by trained healthcare professionals. Its medications, monitoring, and procedures exceed the usual scope of bystander first aid.
Good Samaritan law: A law that may protect people who voluntarily assist others in an emergency from certain liability. Legal protections and duties can shape whether and how bystanders provide aid.
