First Anglo-Burmese War

A war fought from 1824 to 1826 between the British East India Company and the Burmese Empire. It ended with the Treaty of Yandabo, which imposed major territorial concessions on Burma.

Konbaung dynasty: The Burmese royal dynasty that ruled from 1752 until the British annexation of Upper Burma in 1885. Its expansion under Bodawpaya brought Burmese power into conflict with British-held India.
Rangoon campaign: The British invasion and occupation of Rangoon during the opening phase of the First Anglo-Burmese War. British forces seized the port in 1824 but struggled to advance inland.
Archibald Campbell: A British general who commanded Company forces in the First Anglo-Burmese War. He led the main British expedition from the landing at Rangoon to the advance toward Ava.
Treaty of Yandabo: The 1826 treaty that ended the First Anglo-Burmese War and imposed territorial and financial terms on Burma. It formalized the Burmese cession of Arakan, Tenasserim, Assam, Manipur, and Cachar.
Bodawpaya: A Burmese king of the Konbaung dynasty who ruled from 1782 to 1819. His campaigns expanded Burmese influence toward Assam and Manipur, heightening border tensions.
Danforth's flotilla: A British naval force that operated on Burmese rivers during the First Anglo-Burmese War. River transport and gunboats helped British forces move supplies through difficult terrain.
George IV: King of the United Kingdom from 1820 to 1830. The war was fought under his reign, when the Company governed British India.
Arakan: A coastal region of western Myanmar, also known historically as Rakhine. The treaty ceded Arakan to the British, extending their control along Burma’s western frontier.
Assam: A region in northeastern South Asia, situated between the Brahmaputra valley and surrounding hills. Burmese occupation of Assam helped bring the empire into direct contact with Company territory.
Arakan campaign: The First Anglo-Burmese War campaign fought in the coastal region west of the Arakan Yoma range. Disease and difficult terrain made this British front especially costly.
