First Anglo-Dutch War

The First Anglo-Dutch War was a naval conflict between the English Commonwealth and the Dutch Republic from 1652 to 1654, fought chiefly over trade and maritime supremacy.

Battle of Dungeness: A major naval battle fought off Kent on 30 November 1652, ending in an English defeat. The Dutch victory exposed weaknesses in English fleet readiness early in the war.
Navigation Act 1651: An English statute requiring most goods imported into England to travel on English ships or ships of their producing country. Its restrictions threatened Dutch carrying trade and sharpened Anglo-Dutch tensions.
George Monck: An English general and admiral who commanded Commonwealth forces and later helped restore the monarchy. He commanded the English fleet at the decisive Battle of the Gabbard.
Treaty of Westminster (1654): The treaty that ended the First Anglo-Dutch War in April 1654. It formalized peace while leaving major commercial tensions unsettled.
Battle of Portland: A three-day naval battle fought in the English Channel in February 1653, ending in an English victory. The English victory restored control of the Channel after the Battle of Dungeness.
