First Barbary War

The First Barbary War was a conflict between the United States and Tripolitania from 1801 to 1805, fought over tribute demands and attacks on American shipping in the Mediterranean.

Tripolitania: A North African regency centered on Tripoli, nominally under Ottoman suzerainty and ruled by the Karamanli dynasty. Its ruler Yusuf Karamanli challenged American efforts to end tribute payments.
Barbary States: North African polities that included Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli, with distinct rulers and political arrangements. Tripoli's demands belonged to a wider system of Mediterranean diplomacy and maritime coercion.
Thomas Jefferson: The third president of the United States, serving from 1801 to 1809. He rejected Tripoli's latest demands and ordered naval action after taking office.
United States Marine Corps: The naval infantry service of the United States, established in 1775. Marines took part in the Derna expedition, later commemorated in the service's hymn.
United States Navy: The maritime service of the United States federal government, established in 1794. Its squadrons enforced the American blockade and fought Tripolitan forces.
Barbary corsairs: Privateers and state-backed raiders operating from North African ports against ships and coastal settlements. Their seizures of vessels and captives helped drive American demands for secure commerce.
Yusuf Karamanli: The pasha of Tripoli from 1795 to 1832 and head of the Karamanli dynasty. His confrontation with the United States began the war; his government negotiated its end.
U.S. foreign policy: The strategies and decisions through which the United States conducts relations with other states and international actors. The war exposed an early choice between paying tribute and using force to defend commerce.
Blockade of Tripoli: A United States naval campaign that sought to restrict shipping to and from Tripoli during the war. The blockade was the main sustained American military pressure on Tripolitania.
Barbary slave trade: The capture and sale of people by North African corsairs and related markets around the Mediterranean. Captivity of sailors made the costs of Barbary maritime conflict especially immediate.
