First Battle of El Alamein

A World War II battle fought in Egypt from 1 to 27 July 1942, in which Allied forces halted the Axis advance toward Alexandria and the Suez Canal.

El Alamein line: A defensive position in Egypt anchored by the Mediterranean coast and the impassable Qattara Depression. Its narrow corridor constrained Axis movement and gave the Allied defense its shape.
Claude Auchinleck: A British field marshal who commanded the Eighth Army and Middle East Command during the July 1942 battle. He directed the Allied defense after Rommel's advance reached El Alamein.
