First Battle of Kharkov

The October 1941 battle in which German forces captured Kharkiv from Soviet defenders during Operation Barbarossa.

Army Group South: The German army group that invaded Ukraine and southern Soviet territory during Operation Barbarossa. Its formations drove east and captured Kharkiv.
Operation Barbarossa: Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union, launched on 22 June 1941. Its southward campaign brought German forces to Kharkiv.
Second Battle of Kharkov: A May 1942 battle in which a Soviet offensive near Kharkiv ended in a major German victory. The later battle reversed the direction of attack but again left the city in German hands.
First Battle of Kiev: A 1918 battle in which German and Ukrainian forces captured Kyiv from Bolshevik troops. Its similar name denotes a different war and a different capture of a Ukrainian city.
