First Battle of Ypres

A First World War battle in Belgium, fought from October to November 1914, in which Allied forces halted the German advance toward the English Channel.

Race to the Sea: A series of First World War operations in 1914 as Allied and German armies tried to outflank each other toward the North Sea. The competing flanking movements brought the armies into contact around Ypres.
John French: A British field marshal who commanded the British Expeditionary Force during the opening campaigns of the First World War. He led the British force defending Ypres and later disputed French support during the crisis.
Second Battle of Ypres: A First World War battle fought near Ypres in April and May 1915, notable for Germany's first large-scale poison-gas attack on the Western Front. It was the next major battle fought around the salient established in 1914.
