First French Empire

The French state ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte as emperor from 1804 until his abdication in 1814, briefly restored during the Hundred Days in 1815.

Napoleonic Code: The French civil code promulgated in 1804, establishing uniform rules on property, family, and civil rights. It standardized civil law across France and influenced legal systems in territories under imperial control.
French Revolution: The political and social upheaval in France from 1789 that ended the monarchy and transformed European politics. Revolutionary institutions and conflicts formed the political landscape Napoleon inherited.
Josephine de Beauharnais: Empress of the French from 1804 until her divorce from Napoleon in 1810. Her coronation and dynastic marriage made her central to the court’s public image.

Confederation of the Rhine: A French-protected association of German states formed in 1806 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. It extended French dominance into central Europe and altered the German political map.
Napoleonic Conscription: The system of compulsory military service that supplied France’s armies during the Napoleonic era. Conscription sustained the mass armies on which imperial expansion depended.
Coup of 18 Brumaire: The coup d’état of 9–10 November 1799 that overthrew the French Directory and established the Consulate. It began the political sequence that led from Napoleon’s rule as First Consul to empire.
