First Indochina War

The First Indochina War was a conflict from 1946 to 1954 between France and the Việt Minh, ending in French withdrawal and Vietnam’s temporary division.

Việt Minh: A Vietnamese nationalist and communist-led movement that fought French rule and later led North Vietnam. Its guerrilla forces and political organization sustained the war against France.
French Indochina: A French colonial federation in Southeast Asia comprising Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The war began within this colonial territory and reshaped its political boundaries.
Geneva Conference (1954): An international conference that negotiated settlements for Indochina and Korea in 1954. Its agreements formalized the end of France’s war in Indochina.
Cambodian independence: The end of French colonial rule in Cambodia, recognized in 1953. Cambodia gained independence before the 1954 settlement, unlike Vietnam’s temporary partition.
Battle of Dien Bien Phu: The 1954 battle in which Việt Minh forces besieged and defeated a French garrison in northwest Vietnam. The defeat decisively weakened France’s position in negotiations.
Japanese occupation of French Indochina: Japan’s wartime occupation of French Indochina, which lasted from 1940 until Japan’s surrender in 1945. The occupation weakened French authority and altered Vietnam’s political landscape.
Geneva Accords: The 1954 agreements that ended hostilities in Indochina and set temporary military demarcation lines in Vietnam. They provided for a temporary division of Vietnam at the seventeenth parallel.
Laotian independence: The end of French colonial rule in Laos, achieved in stages and recognized in 1953. Laos became independent without the north-south partition imposed on Vietnam.
Navarre Plan: A French military strategy launched in 1953 to regain the initiative and force a favorable end to the war. Its deployment at Dien Bien Phu set the conditions for France’s decisive defeat.
August Revolution: The Việt Minh-led seizure of power across much of Vietnam in August 1945, following Japan’s surrender. It established the independent government France sought to reverse.
