First Intermediate Period of Egypt

A period of political fragmentation between Egypt’s Old and Middle Kingdoms, conventionally dated around 2181–2055 BCE. Rival dynasties ruled from Herakleopolis and Thebes before Theban rulers reunified the country.

Ninth Dynasty of Egypt: A Herakleopolitan dynasty that ruled parts of Egypt during the First Intermediate Period. Its kings formed one of the principal courts competing for authority in the north.
Old Kingdom of Egypt: A period of ancient Egyptian history marked by centralized monarchy and the construction of major pyramid complexes. The First Intermediate Period followed the weakening of this centralized order.
