First Italian War of Independence

A conflict fought in 1848–1849 between the Kingdom of Sardinia and Italian volunteers on one side and the Austrian Empire on the other, during the first phase of Italian unification.

Battle of Custoza (1848): An Austrian victory over Sardinian forces near Verona in July 1848. Its defeat forced Charles Albert to retreat and accept an armistice.
Charles Albert of Sardinia: King of Sardinia from 1831 to 1849 and leader of its campaigns against Austria. He declared war, suffered defeat, and abdicated after Novara.

Joseph Radetzky von Radetz: Austrian field marshal who commanded forces in northern Italy during the revolutions of 1848–1849. His victories at Custoza and Novara secured Austria’s military position.
Five Days of Milan: The March 1848 uprising that drove Austrian forces out of Milan. Its success helped provoke Sardinia’s declaration of war.
