First Italo-Ethiopian War

The 1895–1896 war between the Ethiopian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy ended with Ethiopian victory and Italy’s recognition of Ethiopian independence.

Battle of Adwa: The 1896 battle in which Ethiopian forces decisively defeated the Italian army. Its outcome broke Italy’s invasion and forced recognition of Ethiopian independence.
Menelik II: Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 to 1913, known for expanding and defending the empire. He mobilized Ethiopian forces and led the diplomacy that challenged Italy’s claims.
Italian Eritrea: An Italian colonial possession on the Red Sea coast, formally established in 1890. Its expansion inland brought Italian forces into conflict with Ethiopia.

Ras Makonnen: An Ethiopian nobleman and military commander who served Menelik II. He commanded forces in the campaigns against Italy, including at Adwa.
