Indo-Pakistani War of 1947–1948

The first armed conflict between India and Pakistan, fought mainly over Jammu and Kashmir after the 1947 partition, and halted by a UN-brokered ceasefire in 1949.

Accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India: The 1947 instrument by which Maharaja Hari Singh acceded Jammu and Kashmir to India. Its signing supplied India’s legal basis for sending troops into the state.
Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan. Partition created the two states and left princely-state accessions unresolved.
