First Mithridatic War

The First Mithridatic War was a conflict between the Roman Republic and Mithridates VI of Pontus, fought mainly in Asia Minor and Greece from 89 to 85 BCE. It ended with Roman victory and the Peace of Dardanos.

Mithridates VI Eupator: King of Pontus from about 120 to 63 BCE, Mithridates VI built a powerful kingdom and repeatedly fought Rome. His expansion and resistance to Roman rule brought the two powers into war.
Bithynian succession crisis: A dispute over the Bithynian throne that prompted Rome to intervene in the kingdom’s affairs. The crisis helped trigger the immediate confrontation between Rome and Mithridates.
Lucius Cornelius Sulla: A Roman general and politician who became dictator after winning the civil war against Marius’ supporters. He led Rome’s campaign in Greece and imposed the settlement at Dardanos.
Battle of Chaeronea (86 BC): A battle in 86 BCE in which Sulla’s Roman army defeated a larger Pontic force in Boeotia. The victory broke Mithridates’ hold on central Greece.
Sulla's eastern settlement: The terms imposed by Sulla on eastern communities and rulers after his victory over Mithridates in 85 BCE. The settlement restored Roman authority while extracting money and ships from the defeated king.
Asia Province: A Roman province in western Asia Minor, formed from the former kingdom of Pergamon. Roman control and taxation there fueled resentment before Mithridates invaded.
Nicomedes IV of Bithynia: The last king of independent Bithynia, whose bequest of his kingdom to Rome was contested by Mithridates VI. His claims and Rome’s intervention turned Bithynia into a flashpoint.
Gaius Marius: A Roman general and politician who held the consulship seven times and competed with Sulla for power. His bid for the command against Mithridates helped ignite Rome’s internal crisis.
Battle of Orchomenus: A battle in 86 BCE in which Sulla defeated Archelaus’ Pontic army near Lake Copais in Boeotia. Its outcome secured Roman dominance in Greece before negotiations began.
Roman civil war of 88–82 BC: A conflict between Roman factions led by Sulla and Marius’ supporters, ending in Sulla’s victory. The struggle at Rome overlapped the eastern war and shaped its command and aftermath.
