First-person narrative

A narrative told by a character within the story, using first-person pronouns such as “I” or “we.” Its account is limited to what that narrator experiences, knows, or chooses to disclose.

First-person narrator: A character who narrates a story using first-person pronouns. This is the voice through which a first-person narrative presents its events.
Third-person narrative: A narrative told using third-person pronouns, such as “he,” “she,” or “they.” It can follow one or several characters without making them the narrating voice.
Autobiography: A person's account of their own life, written by that person. Its author recounts lived experience from a first-person perspective.
Narrator: The voice or agent that tells a narrative. A first-person narrative is defined by a narrator who speaks as a participant.
The Great Gatsby: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, narrated by Nick Carraway about Jay Gatsby and their social world. Nick’s limited account makes Gatsby vivid while leaving parts of his life uncertain.
Narrative voice: The distinctive manner in which a narrative is told. Voice shapes how the first-person narrator sounds and interprets events.
Second-person narrative: A narrative that addresses its subject as “you.” It shifts the grammatical position of the audience from first-person narration’s “I” or “we.”
Memoir: A nonfiction account focused on selected experiences or themes from the author's life. The author’s first-person voice frames remembered events and their meaning.
Point of view (literature): The position from which a story’s events and information are presented. First-person is one way a narrative establishes its point of view.
Moby-Dick: Herman Melville’s 1851 novel about the Pequod’s hunt for a white whale, narrated by Ishmael. Ishmael’s voice combines personal testimony, digression, and reflections on the voyage.
