First-person shooter

A video game genre in which play is shown from a character’s first-person viewpoint and centers on using ranged weapons against opponents.

Hitscan: A weapon-detection method that treats a shot as an instantaneous line or ray rather than a moving projectile. Many shooters use hitscan weapons to register aim and impact without simulating a bullet’s travel.
Maze War: A 1970s networked maze game in which players viewed the environment from first-person and hunted one another. Its first-person combat and multiplayer structure anticipate core shooter conventions.
Three-dimensional computer graphics: The creation and rendering of images that represent objects and spaces in three dimensions. A navigable 3D world makes the genre’s first-person spatial viewpoint possible.
Third-person shooter: A shooter genre in which the game camera shows the player character from outside, usually behind or over the shoulder. Its visible avatar changes spatial awareness and aiming compared with the first-person view.
Esports: Organized competitive video gaming in which players or teams compete under formal rules. Skill-based shooters became major spectator and tournament games.
Projectile motion: The motion of an object launched into space and acted on by forces such as gravity and drag. Rocket launchers and grenades use moving projectiles that players must lead or evade.
Battlezone: Atari’s 1980 arcade game, which placed players inside a tank’s first-person view of a three-dimensional battlefield. It helped establish first-person 3D combat as an arcade game format.
Camera model: A mathematical or computational description of how a viewpoint projects a scene into an image. The camera model determines perspective, field of view, and visual distortion.
Rail shooter: A shooter in which movement along a largely fixed route is controlled by the game rather than the player. It retains ranged combat while sharply limiting free movement through the level.
Counter-Strike: A tactical multiplayer shooter series centered on rounds between terrorist and counter-terrorist teams. Its competitive format became a durable model for team-based shooter esports.
