First Punic War

The First Punic War was fought between Rome and Carthage from 264 to 241 BCE, chiefly over Sicily. Rome won, gaining control of the island and imposing a large indemnity on Carthage.

Battle of Mylae: A Roman naval victory over Carthage in 260 BCE, often associated with Rome’s first major success at sea. The corvus helped Roman forces turn a naval engagement into close-quarters combat.
Messana: An ancient city in northeastern Sicily, now known as Messina. Control of Messana became the immediate flashpoint for intervention by both powers.
Treaty of Lutatius: The peace treaty of 241 BCE that ended the First Punic War between Rome and Carthage. Its terms formalized Carthage’s withdrawal from Sicily and its payment to Rome.
Roman Republic: The political system that governed Rome from the establishment of the republic until the rise of Augustus. Rome’s institutions enabled repeated mobilization of citizens and resources during the war.
Corvus (boarding device): A hinged boarding bridge used by Roman ships to grapple enemy vessels and carry soldiers aboard. This device let Rome exploit its infantry strength against Carthaginian ships.
Mamertines: A group of Campanian mercenaries who seized Messana in the early third century BCE. Their appeal for aid prompted the rival interventions that began the war.
Roman Sicily: The Roman province established in Sicily after the island’s conquest in the First Punic War. Sicily became Rome’s first province beyond the Italian peninsula.
Carthage: An ancient Phoenician-founded city-state in North Africa that became a major western Mediterranean power. Carthage’s commercial reach, overseas holdings, and naval strength contrasted with Rome’s growing land power.
Siege of Lilybaeum: A Roman siege of the Carthaginian stronghold of Lilybaeum in western Sicily, begun in 250 BCE. The prolonged siege shows why Roman victory on land did not quickly end Carthaginian resistance.
Hiero II of Syracuse: The ruler of Syracuse from about 270 to 215 BCE, who became Rome’s ally during the war. His changing relations with the Mamertines and Rome shaped the conflict’s opening phase.
