First Servile War

The First Servile War was a major uprising of enslaved people against the Roman Republic in Sicily from 135 to 132 BCE. Led initially by Eunus, it established a rebel kingdom before Roman forces suppressed it.

Eunus: Eunus was a Syrian-born enslaved man who led the Sicilian uprising and ruled the rebels as King Antiochus. His prophecies and royal authority helped turn revolt into a coordinated kingdom.
Roman Sicily: Roman Sicily was the island province governed by Rome after its victory in the First Punic War. Its agricultural wealth and Roman administration formed the setting for the revolt.
Diodorus Siculus: Diodorus Siculus was a Greek historian from Sicily who wrote a universal history in the first century BCE. His surviving account is the principal narrative source for the revolt.
Roman triumph: A Roman triumph was a public procession and ceremony celebrating a victorious commander and army. Roman commanders marked victory over the rebels through a triumphal celebration.
Cleon: Cleon was a Cilician-born enslaved man who joined the Sicilian rebels and became one of their military leaders. His forces expanded the revolt beyond Eunus’s initial base.
Latifundium: A latifundium was a large landed estate in ancient Rome, often worked by enslaved laborers. Large estates concentrated enslaved workers under harsh conditions in Sicily.
Gaius Fulvius Flaccus: Gaius Fulvius Flaccus was a Roman consul who served as a commander during the First Servile War. His initial campaign failed to end the uprising.
Roman provincial administration: Roman provincial administration was the system through which Rome governed territories outside Italy. The revolt tested Roman control of Sicily and its provincial institutions.
Enna: Enna was an ancient inland city in central Sicily, known in antiquity as a stronghold of the rebel kingdom. The rebels made this defensible city their principal center.
Roman slavery: Roman slavery was a system in which enslaved people were legally treated as property and compelled to work. The rebels’ shared condition arose within this institution.
