First Syrian Republic

The Syrian state that emerged under the French Mandate and became independent in 1946. It ended in 1958 when Syria joined Egypt to form the United Arab Republic.

National Bloc: A Syrian nationalist political coalition that led negotiations with France and dominated early post-independence politics. Its leaders formed the republic’s first governing elite after independence.
Adib Shishakli: A Syrian military officer who dominated politics from 1949 and ruled as president from 1953 to 1954. His authoritarian presidency tested the republic’s parliamentary institutions.
Baghdad Pact: A 1955 security alliance between Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom. Syria’s opposition to the pact placed it against a Western-backed regional bloc.
Ba'ath Party: An Arab nationalist political party founded in the 1940s that advocated Arab unity and socialism. Its rise drew on political currents active during the republic’s final years.
