First touch

A player's initial contact with the ball after receiving it, used to control, redirect, or prepare the ball for the next action.

Ball control: The ability to manage a ball’s movement and keep it available for play. First touch is the opening act of controlling a received ball.
Receiving the ball: The act of taking possession of a pass or loose ball. The first touch is the initial phase of receiving a pass.
Association football: A team sport in which players advance a ball mainly with their feet and score by putting it in the opposing goal. First touch is a core ball skill in this sport.
Heavy touch: A ball contact that sends the ball farther from a player than intended. It is the common failure mode of a first touch that does not control the ball.
Body shape: A player's orientation and posture in relation to the ball, opponents, and intended next action. An open body shape lets the first touch carry the ball toward the next play.
One-touch pass: A pass played immediately, without controlling the ball in a separate touch first. A deliberate first touch can itself be the pass.

Nutmeg: A move in which a player sends the ball through an opponent’s legs and regains or passes it. A first touch aims to manage a received ball; a nutmeg exploits an opponent’s stance.
Foot-eye coordination: The coordination of visual information with precise foot movements. Players use it to judge the ball’s arrival and make clean contact.
Dribbling: Moving with a ball under close control while advancing or evading opponents. A touch into space can turn reception directly into a dribble.
