First Turkic Khaganate

A Turkic empire founded by Bumin Qaghan in 552 that united steppe peoples across much of Central Asia before splitting into eastern and western khaganates.

Bumin Qaghan: The Ashina leader who founded the First Turkic Khaganate after overthrowing Rouran rule. His revolt against the Rouran in 552 established the khaganate.
Qaghan: A supreme imperial title used by rulers of several Inner Asian steppe empires. The title expressed the khaganate's sovereignty over subordinate rulers and peoples.
Eastern Turkic Khaganate: The eastern successor state that emerged when the First Turkic Khaganate divided in the early seventh century. It inherited the eastern heartland after imperial unity broke down.

Rouran Khaganate: A Mongolic steppe empire that ruled parts of Inner Asia before its defeat by the Turks. The Rouran were the overlords whose defeat enabled Turkic independence.
Tribal confederation: A political alliance in which distinct groups retain local leadership while coordinating under common authority. The empire incorporated diverse steppe groups without erasing their local structures.
