Fischer esterification

Fischer esterification is the acid-catalyzed, reversible reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol to produce an ester and water.

Nucleophilic acyl substitution: A reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a group attached to an acyl carbon. The reaction proceeds by addition to the carbonyl followed by loss of water.
Ethyl acetate: An ester with formula CH₃COOCH₂CH₃, widely used as a solvent. It can be prepared from acetic acid and ethanol by this reaction.
Transesterification: The exchange of an ester’s alcohol-derived group with another alcohol-derived group. It starts from an ester rather than directly combining a carboxylic acid and alcohol.
Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, –COOH. It supplies the acyl portion incorporated into the ester.
Emil Fischer: A German chemist whose research established major foundations of carbohydrate and purine chemistry. The named esterification is associated with Fischer’s work on organic synthesis.
Tetrahedral intermediate: A transient species with a tetrahedral carbon bonded to four groups, formed during addition to a carbonyl. Alcohol attack on the protonated carbonyl creates this intermediate.
Isoamyl acetate: An ester with a banana-like odor, used in flavorings and as a solvent. Its synthesis from isoamyl alcohol and acetic acid illustrates fragrance ester preparation.
Acid chloride: A carboxylic acid derivative in which chlorine replaces the hydroxyl group. Acid chlorides acylate alcohols readily without the same equilibrium limitation.
Alcohol (chemistry): An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Its oxygen becomes the ester’s single-bonded oxygen.
Hermann Emil Fischer: The full name of the German chemist commonly known as Emil Fischer. The reaction’s eponym is sometimes encountered under Fischer’s full name.
