Fish stock assessment estimates a fish population’s abundance, productivity, and fishing mortality to evaluate its status and inform management.

Catch per unit effort: The quantity of fish caught per unit of fishing effort, used as an index of relative abundance. Changes in standardized catch rates can indicate abundance trends, though fishers’ behavior can distort the signal.
Fish stock: A fish population, or group of populations, treated as a unit for research and management. The stock is the population unit whose abundance and productivity an assessment estimates.
