Fisheries management regulates fishing and stewards fish populations to balance ecological sustainability with social and economic goals.

Total allowable catch: A legally or administratively set maximum amount of a fish stock that may be caught during a defined period. Catch limits turn stock assessments into a ceiling on removals.
Fish stock: A population of fish treated as a unit for assessment and management. Managers define the population unit before estimating its condition or setting limits.
Fishery closure: A temporary or permanent prohibition on fishing in a specified area, season, or fishery. Closures can halt harvest during spawning periods or stock recovery.

Fishery collapse: A severe decline in a fishery’s catch or target population, often accompanied by economic disruption. Collapse demonstrates the ecological and social costs of failed or delayed controls.
Climate change and fisheries: The effects of climate-driven changes in ocean conditions on fish populations, fisheries, and their management. Shifting species distributions can make fixed boundaries and historical reference points unreliable.
