Fishing net

A mesh implement used to catch fish by enclosing, entangling, or trapping them. Its design varies with the target species, fishing method, and water conditions.

Gillnet: A wall-like fishing net that catches fish when they become entangled by their gills or bodies. Its mesh is sized to hold fish that try to swim through.
Fishing net mesh: The repeated openings formed by connected strands in a fishing net. Opening size and shape determine which fish can pass through or become caught.

Bycatch: The unintended capture of species or individuals during fishing. Non-target animals can become entangled alongside the intended catch.
Antrea Net: A prehistoric fishing net discovered in Antrea, Finland, and dated to about 8300 BCE. Its remains provide direct evidence of early net-making and fishing.
