Fishing reel

A mechanical device mounted on a fishing rod to store, release, and retrieve fishing line. Its design controls line handling and helps tire and land fish.

Spinning reel: A fishing reel whose fixed spool releases line during casting and whose rotating bail winds it back. Its fixed spool avoids the rotating-spool backlash found in baitcasting reels.
Fishing line: A cord used to connect fishing tackle to a rod and transmit force between angler and fish. The reel stores and manages the line throughout casting and retrieval.
Fly fishing: A fishing method that casts an artificial fly using a weighted line. Fly reels store specialized line and often provide drag for running fish.
Spincast reel: A fishing reel with an enclosed spool and a button-operated line release. Its covered spool and simple release contrast with exposed spinning and baitcasting designs.
Baitcasting reel: A fishing reel whose spool rotates to release and retrieve line, commonly mounted above the rod. The spool's rotation gives direct control but can cause backlash during a cast.
Fishing rod: A flexible, tapered pole used to cast fishing line and control a hooked fish. A reel mounts to the rod and works with its flex during a fight.
Trolling (fishing): A fishing method that draws bait or lures through water behind a moving boat. Trolling reels must manage line deployed over long distances and sustained pressure.
Conventional fishing reel: A rotating-spool fishing reel designed chiefly for substantial line capacity and heavy-duty fishing. It overlaps with baitcasting reels but is commonly built for larger fish and heavier tackle.
Drag system: A friction mechanism that lets line leave a reel under controlled tension. The drag yields line when a hooked fish pulls harder than the set resistance.
Spool (fishing): The cylindrical or shallow-sided part of a fishing reel on which line is wound. Its shape and capacity determine how much line the reel can hold.
