Fishing vessel

A vessel designed or used to catch, process, or transport fish and other aquatic resources. Fishing vessels range from small boats working near shore to large factory ships operating far offshore.

Trawling: A fishing method that pulls a net through water or along the seabed. Trawlers use powerful winches and purpose-built hulls to tow nets.
Trawler: A fishing vessel that catches fish by towing a trawl net. Trawlers are a major vessel class defined by their towing gear.

Purse seiner: A fishing vessel that catches schooling fish with a purse seine. Its net-handling equipment and layout are built around encircling schools.
Factory trawler: A trawler that processes and preserves its catch aboard while fishing. It combines capture and processing, allowing extended trips far from shore.
Ghost fishing: The continued capture of marine life by lost or abandoned fishing gear. Gear lost overboard can keep fishing after a vessel has left the area.
Fish processing vessel: A vessel that processes fish at sea, whether or not it catches the fish itself. Processing is one fishing-vessel role, but processing vessels may operate separately from capture vessels.
