Five Barbarians

The Five Barbarians is a traditional Chinese collective name for the Xiongnu, Jie, Xianbei, Di, and Qiang peoples, who lived largely north and west of China’s central plains.

Sixteen Kingdoms: A period of rival states in northern China, conventionally dated 304–439. Several states founded by peoples grouped as the Five Barbarians ruled during this era.
Xiongnu: A confederation of nomadic pastoral peoples that shaped the politics of the eastern Eurasian steppe and Han China. They are one of the five peoples named in the traditional grouping.

Xianbei: A people of the eastern Eurasian steppe who founded states in northern China after the Han period. Their migrations and regimes form a major part of the history grouped under this name.
