Flashback

A narrative passage that presents events from an earlier time than the story’s current moment, supplying context or altering how present events are understood.

Analepsis: A narrative presentation of events that occurred before the current point in the story. This narratological term describes the temporal shift a flashback performs.
Flashback (cinema): A film sequence that depicts events earlier than the film’s present action. Editing, sound, and image treatment can mark a cinematic flashback.
Flash-forward: A narrative passage that presents events from a later time than the story’s current moment. It moves toward future events, opposite the flashback’s backward temporal shift.
Citizen Kane: A 1941 film by Orson Welles that reconstructs the life of Charles Foster Kane through multiple accounts. Its interview structure gathers memories as flashback sequences.
Narrative chronology: The order in which events occur within a story world. A flashback departs from this event order to present earlier events later.
