Flatiron Building

The Flatiron Building is a steel-framed skyscraper at 175 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, completed in 1902. Its narrow, wedge-shaped plan made it one of New York City’s most recognizable early skyscrapers.

Daniel Burnham: Daniel Burnham was an American architect and urban planner who led the design of major buildings and city plans. His firm designed the Flatiron Building, translating its constrained site into a distinctive form.
Wind engineering: Wind engineering studies how airflow affects structures and how buildings can resist wind loads. Wind pressure was a central concern for a tall, slender building on an exposed corner site.
Broadway (Manhattan): Broadway is a major Manhattan street that runs diagonally across the island’s street grid. Its diagonal course creates the pointed parcel occupied by the Flatiron Building.

National Register of Historic Places: The National Register of Historic Places is the United States federal list of historically significant properties. The Flatiron Building was listed in the Register in 1979.
Steel-frame construction: Steel-frame construction uses a structural skeleton of steel columns and beams to support a building. Its steel skeleton allowed the Flatiron Building to rise well above its narrow plot.
Load-bearing wall: A load-bearing wall supports structural loads from floors or roofs above it. The building’s steel skeleton differs from masonry buildings whose walls carry the main loads.
