Flevoland

Flevoland is a province in the central Netherlands, established in 1986 on land reclaimed from the former Zuiderzee. It comprises the Noordoostpolder and the Flevopolder.

Zuiderzee Works: A Dutch system of dams and land-reclamation projects that transformed the Zuiderzee into the freshwater IJsselmeer. These projects created the polders that became Flevoland.
Land reclamation: The process of creating usable land from seas, lakes, wetlands, or other water-covered areas. Flevoland is a large-scale example of land created by draining water.
Almere: A planned city in Flevoland, founded in 1976 and now the province’s largest municipality. Its rapid growth made it a major destination for people moving from the Randstad.
Zuiderzee flood of 1916: A severe North Sea storm flood that inundated communities around the Zuiderzee in January 1916. The disaster strengthened political support for the Zuiderzee Works.
Zuiderzee: A former shallow inlet of the North Sea in the Netherlands, partly enclosed and converted into the IJsselmeer. Its waters covered the land reclaimed for Flevoland.
Polder: A low-lying tract of land enclosed by dikes, with water levels controlled by drainage. Flevoland’s reclaimed districts are polders kept dry by managed water systems.
Lelystad: The capital of Flevoland, established on the eastern Flevopolder and named after Cornelis Lely. It serves as the province’s administrative center.
Dutch water management: The institutions, engineering, and practices used in the Netherlands to manage water and flood risk. Flevoland depends on this broader national system of water control.
Afsluitdijk: A 32-kilometre dam completed in 1932 that closed off the Zuiderzee from the North Sea. Its closure made large-scale reclamation and freshwater management possible.
Dike: An embankment built to hold back water and protect land from flooding. Dikes enclose Flevoland’s polders and separate them from surrounding waters.
