Flight management system

An aircraft avionics system that combines navigation and performance data to plan routes, calculate flight guidance, and support automated control.

Flight management computer: An onboard computer that runs flight-management functions, including route planning, navigation, and performance calculations. It processes the route and aircraft data behind the system’s guidance.
Inertial navigation system: A navigation system that estimates position and motion from measurements of acceleration and rotation. It supplies position estimates when external navigation signals are unavailable or limited.
Performance-based navigation: A navigation framework that specifies required aircraft navigation performance for a route or operation. It describes the navigation capabilities used by many routes programmed into the system.
Flight control system: The aircraft systems that command and regulate control surfaces or other means of controlling flight. It directly controls aircraft motion, while the flight management system primarily computes plans and guidance.
Flight plan: A planned route and set of operational details for an aircraft flight. The system stores and sequences the route as a series of navigational legs.
Global Positioning System: A satellite-based radio navigation system that provides positioning, navigation, and timing services. Its position fixes can update the aircraft’s computed location.
Instrument approach: A published procedure that guides an aircraft toward a runway using instrument navigation references. Coded approach procedures can be loaded and flown with system guidance.
Electronic flight instrument system: A cockpit display system that presents flight instruments and related information electronically. It presents information and guidance rather than planning the route and computing performance.
Area navigation: A navigation method that lets aircraft fly along any desired path within the coverage of navigation aids or onboard systems. It lets the system define routes beyond direct-to-beacon navigation.
VHF omnidirectional range: A ground-based radio navigation aid that provides aircraft with bearing information relative to the station. The system can use VOR signals to determine or cross-check position.
