Flightlessness

Flightlessness is the evolutionary loss or reduction of powered flight in birds and other animals. It can arise when flight brings little benefit or imposes substantial costs.

Evolutionary trade-off: An evolutionary trade-off occurs when improving one function reduces investment in another. Reduced investment in flight can free resources for traits that improve survival or reproduction on the ground.
Ostrich: The ostrich is a large African bird that cannot fly and is adapted for fast running. Its reduced wings coexist with powerful legs suited to open terrestrial habitats.
Convergent evolution: Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar traits in separate lineages. Flightlessness evolved repeatedly in unrelated birds facing comparable ecological conditions.

Insular gigantism: Insular gigantism is the evolution of unusually large body size in populations isolated on islands. Larger bodies can make flight harder, while island resources may favor growth.
Kakapo: The kakapo is a large, nocturnal, flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand. Its ground-dwelling island ancestry illustrates flightlessness in a parrot lineage.
