Flinders Petrie

Flinders Petrie (1853–1942) was a British Egyptologist and archaeologist who pioneered systematic excavation methods and used pottery sequences to establish archaeological chronology.

Seriation: A method of ordering artifacts by changes in their styles or frequencies over time. Petrie used changing pottery styles to arrange predynastic Egyptian graves chronologically.
William Matthew Flinders: An English navigator and cartographer whose surname was adopted by his grandson Flinders Petrie. Petrie’s middle name honored his maternal grandfather, the explorer Matthew Flinders.
Hilda Petrie: A British Egyptologist and archaeologist who collaborated with Flinders Petrie and documented excavations. She worked alongside Petrie in the field and helped publish archaeological findings.
