Flood control in China

Flood control in China combines dams, levees, diversion works, reservoirs, and warning systems to reduce flood damage across river basins. Its history reflects both monsoon extremes and the risks of building on densely populated floodplains.

Levees: Raised embankments built to keep rivers or coastal waters from inundating adjacent land. They confine floodwaters along the Yangtze and other rivers, while raising risks if they fail.
Yu the Great: A legendary ruler credited in ancient Chinese tradition with controlling catastrophic floods and founding the Xia dynasty. The story presents channeling and drainage, rather than simply blocking water, as an early ideal.
Three Gorges Dam: A large hydroelectric dam on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, completed in 2006. Its reservoir can reduce some downstream flood peaks, but storage must be balanced against power and navigation.
Yellow River flood: An overflow of the Yellow River that inundates surrounding land, often after heavy rain or channel changes. Repeated floods have displaced communities and driven costly cycles of levee construction and repair.
Flood-control reservoir: A reservoir operated in part to store incoming floodwater and release it later at safer rates. Reservoir storage can lower downstream flood peaks when operators preserve capacity before storms.
Yellow River: A major river of northern China, known for its sediment-rich waters and historically destructive floods. Its shifting course and levee failures made flood control a recurring political challenge.
Jingjiang Flood Diversion Area: A designated flood-storage area in Hubei Province used to divert excess Yangtze water from the Jingjiang reach. It illustrates the planned use of inundation zones to protect more densely settled downstream areas.
Floodplain: Low-lying land beside a river that is periodically inundated when the river overflows its channel. Building and farming on Chinese floodplains increase exposure even where protective structures exist.
Flood diversion: The deliberate routing of floodwater away from vulnerable areas into designated channels or storage zones. Diversion channels and detention areas can protect cities when river flows exceed channel capacity.
Grand Canal of China: A network of waterways linking northern and southern China, built and extended across successive dynasties. Canals served transport and water management, though they also required continual flood maintenance.
