Florentine Camerata

The Florentine Camerata was a late-sixteenth-century circle of scholars, musicians, and patrons whose experiments with sung drama helped shape early opera.

Giovanni de' Bardi: A Florentine nobleman and patron who hosted the circle later known as the Florentine Camerata. His gatherings brought together the musicians and scholars who developed its theories.
Monody: A musical style in which a solo voice carries the melody over a simple instrumental accompaniment. It offered a way to make words intelligible while giving a dramatic character a single vocal line.
Dafne (Peri opera): An opera composed by Jacopo Peri to a libretto by Ottavio Rinuccini, first performed in Florence around 1598. Often treated as the first opera, it grew from the Florentine experiments in sung drama.
