Florentine Republic

The Florentine Republic was the city-state government of Florence, governed through civic offices and councils during periods when no Medici family regime controlled the city.

Signoria of Florence: The chief executive body of Florence, composed of elected magistrates known as priori and the gonfaloniere of justice. This magistracy carried out the republic’s government and represented its civic authority.
Florentine Commune: The self-governing urban polity of medieval Florence, which developed institutions of civic rule from the eleventh century onward. The commune supplied the institutional foundations from which later republican governments developed.
Girolamo Savonarola: A Dominican friar who led Florence’s politics and religious reforms after the Medici were expelled in 1494. His influence helped shape the republic’s most distinctive late-fifteenth-century political experiment.
