Flores Sea

The Flores Sea is a western Pacific sea in Indonesia, lying north of Flores and south of Sulawesi. It connects with surrounding seas through passages among the Lesser Sunda Islands.

Banda Sea: A sea in the eastern Indonesian archipelago, east of the Flores Sea. The two seas meet through passages around the islands east of Flores.
Flores: An Indonesian island in the Lesser Sunda chain, south of the Flores Sea. The island gives the sea its name and forms its southern boundary.
Indonesian Throughflow: The movement of water from the Pacific Ocean through Indonesian seas into the Indian Ocean. Regional passages connect Flores Sea waters to this major ocean exchange.
Komodo National Park: An Indonesian protected area encompassing Komodo, Rinca, Padar, and nearby islands and waters. Its northern waters extend into the Flores Sea.
Makassar Strait: A strait between Borneo and Sulawesi that connects the Celebes Sea with the Java Sea. The strait lies north of the Flores Sea beyond Sulawesi.
Sulawesi: An Indonesian island with several long peninsulas, east of Borneo. Sulawesi lies directly north of the Flores Sea.
Coral Triangle: A marine region in the western Pacific with exceptionally high coral and reef-fish diversity. The Flores Sea lies within this center of marine biodiversity.
Wakatobi National Park: An Indonesian marine national park in the Tukangbesi Islands, southeast of Sulawesi. It represents the reef-rich marine landscape near the sea’s northeastern approaches.
Java Sea: A shallow sea in the western Indonesian archipelago, north of Java. The Flores Sea connects westward toward it through passages among the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Sunda Arc: A volcanic island arc formed above the subduction zone south of Indonesia. Its tectonic system shapes the islands and seafloor south of the sea.
