Flow velocity

Flow velocity is the vector velocity of a moving fluid, specifying its speed and direction at each point in space and time.

Velocity field: A vector field assigning a velocity vector to every point in a region. Flow velocity is the value of this field at a particular point and time.
Velocity: A vector quantity describing the rate and direction of change of position. Flow velocity applies this general kinematic quantity to fluid motion.
Volumetric flow rate: The volume of fluid passing through a surface per unit time. Integrating normal velocity across a section gives the volumetric flow rate.
Turbulent flow: Fluid motion characterized by irregular fluctuations, vortices, and enhanced mixing. Its velocity fluctuates across space and time, unlike orderly laminar motion.
Continuity equation: A conservation law stating that changes in fluid density and transport balance locally. It constrains how flow velocity varies when mass is conserved.
Speed: The scalar magnitude of velocity, expressing distance traveled per unit time. Speed gives flow velocity’s magnitude but omits its direction.
Reynolds number: A dimensionless ratio of inertial to viscous effects in fluid motion. Characteristic flow velocity helps determine whether viscous or inertial effects dominate.
Steady flow: A flow whose properties at each fixed point do not change with time. Steadiness concerns time variation, not whether velocity differs between locations.
Navier–Stokes equations: Differential equations describing fluid motion through momentum conservation and constitutive stress relations. They determine velocity evolution from pressure, viscosity, and applied forces.
Eulerian description: A description of fluid motion that measures fields at fixed positions in space. Flow velocity is commonly specified at fixed locations in this framework.
