Flugelhorn

The flugelhorn is a valved brass instrument with a wide conical bore and a mellow tone, commonly used in jazz and brass bands.

Brass instrument: A wind instrument that produces sound through vibrating lips against a cup-shaped mouthpiece. The flugelhorn belongs to this instrument family and uses its characteristic lip-driven sound production.
Piston valve: A brass-instrument valve that lowers a piston to redirect air through additional tubing. Piston-valve flugelhorns use a different valve mechanism from rotary-valve models.
Jazz: A musical tradition originating in African American communities, characterized by improvisation, swing, and evolving styles. Jazz made the flugelhorn a prominent solo voice beyond its earlier band roles.
Trumpet: A high-register brass instrument with a mostly cylindrical bore and a bright, penetrating tone. The trumpet's brighter sound and more cylindrical bore contrast with the flugelhorn's mellow character.
Conical bore: An instrument tube that widens gradually from the mouthpiece toward the bell. Its broadening tube gives the flugelhorn much of its mellow, rounded sound.
Bell (brass instrument): The flared opening at the end of a brass instrument's tubing that radiates sound. The flugelhorn's broad bell helps shape its sound projection and tone.
Brass band: An ensemble built primarily from brass and percussion instruments. The flugelhorn often supplies a mellow, lyrical voice within brass-band textures.
Cornet: A valved brass instrument with a conical bore and a compact, rounded sound. The cornet shares a conical profile with the flugelhorn but has a distinct shape and sound.
Rotary valve: A brass-instrument valve that redirects airflow through additional lengths of tubing when turned. Rotary valves are common on flugelhorns, though piston-valve models also exist.
Transposing instrument: An instrument whose written notes sound at pitches different from their notation. The B-flat flugelhorn sounds a whole step below its written notes.
