Fluid and crystallized intelligence

Fluid intelligence is the ability to reason through novel problems; crystallized intelligence is knowledge and skills accumulated through learning and experience. Raymond Cattell distinguished these related abilities as different components of cognitive ability.

General intelligence: A broad cognitive capacity inferred from performance across diverse mental tasks. Cattell’s two abilities are distinct components within broader accounts of intelligence.
Cognitive aging: Changes in mental abilities that occur across the adult lifespan. Fluid abilities often decline earlier in adulthood, while learned knowledge is more resilient.
Raymond Cattell: A British-American psychologist known for influential theories and statistical studies of personality and intelligence. Cattell introduced the fluid–crystallized distinction in his theory of cognitive abilities.
Cattell–Horn–Carroll theory: A hierarchical model organizing cognitive abilities into broad, intermediate, and narrow levels. It incorporates fluid and crystallized abilities within a more comprehensive taxonomy.
Reasoning: The process of drawing conclusions or solving problems from available information. Novel reasoning is a central expression of fluid intelligence.
Neuroplasticity: The nervous system’s capacity to change its structure or function with experience. Experience-dependent brain change supports the acquisition of crystallized knowledge.
Charles Spearman: A British psychologist who proposed a general intelligence factor based on correlations among mental tests. Cattell developed his account partly to distinguish broad abilities within general intelligence.
Triarchic theory of intelligence: Robert Sternberg’s theory distinguishing analytical, creative, and practical aspects of intelligence. It divides intelligence by kinds of successful behavior rather than fluid and acquired abilities.
Working memory: The limited-capacity system for temporarily maintaining and manipulating information. Holding and rearranging information supports many fluid reasoning tasks.
Education: The organized process of teaching and learning knowledge, skills, and practices. Schooling can expand the vocabulary and factual knowledge associated with crystallized intelligence.
